Vertical World opened the very first rock climbing gym in America in 1987 on Elliott Ave in Seattle. The gym was no more than rocks glued to painted plywood panels. That book spawned our publishing division, Mountaineers Books, which has grown along with our Pacific Northwest programs to get people into wilderness areas and build a community of advocates for wild places
