Known for its incredible rock quality, grippy granite, and abundance of steep splitter cracks, Index is often considered one of the best rock climbing areas in Washington. While Index has a well-earned reputation for stout grades and challenging routes, don’t let that scare you away—there are dozens of fantastic moderate climbs that offer the same exceptional rock and classic Index climbing experience.

Routes range from single-pitch cragging to seven-pitch multi-pitch adventures, with many classics falling in the three- to four-pitch range. The granite climbing makes Index an outstanding place to develop traditional climbing, crack climbing, anchor-building, and multi-pitch skills while climbing some truly memorable routes. Best of all, Index is only about an hour from Seattle, making it one of our favorite destinations for guided rock climbing, climbing instruction, or simply getting in a bunch of great pitches close to home.
