Couloir Skiing 101

Derived from the French word meaning hallway, a couloir refers to a narrow alpine corridor that naturally funnels both movement and consequences—clearly defining where you can and can’t travel. Often framed by steep rock walls and dramatic terrain, couloirs can look intimidating at first glance, but with the right skills, conditions, and terrain selection, they don’t have to be overly technical. In fact, couloir skiing represents some of the most aesthetic, engaging, and rewarding ski mountaineering terrain in the mountains, offering sustained fall-line skiing, incredible position, and a true alpine experience.

If you’ve ever dreamed of rappelling into a ski line or linking turns through steep, elegant alpine corridors, this course is designed to introduce you to couloir skiing in a thoughtful, progressive way. With hundreds of couloirs accessible within a day’s drive of Seattle, we’re able to tailor objectives to your experience level, current avalanche conditions, and snow quality—ensuring the best possible skiing on the day. From moderate, approachable couloirs to more advanced lines that may require belays or rappels, this program provides a structured introduction to safe, efficient, and confident steep skiing, helping you build the skills and judgment needed to move comfortably in classic alpine couloir terrain.
